Woohoo! It Ain't Daddy's Cybersex Anymore
From the advent of "Deep Throat" and Atari's "Pong" comes the birth of computer sex. It's the history of what most call 'cybersex' and it's actually quite the interesting read.Of course, the article might be taken with a grain of rock-salt as it comes from salon.com - a whacked-out, seriously tree-hugging, liberal kum-ba-ya rag. But overall, appears to be a relatively unbiased look at things. Of course, it is an interview with a book author.
Tracy Clark-Flory of Salon.com interviews Damon Brown who authored 'Porn & Pong' - a book, apparently about the history of computers and sex. As I said, the article is an interesting read and , of course, will turn a lot of heads because it's one of those subjects that you have an insatiable, private curiosity about. Just like everyone else on the planet who succumbs to human-nature.
So much for the book. Who needs it now? You learn enough in the article to basically forego the book. Unless of course you don't mind walking through the local Target store with it in-hand. But what else is there to say that isn't said in the interview?
I mean, a whole book? It apparently by reasoning will have a lot of conjecture and opinion and so-called facts (which are likely run through the 'spin-cycle' to ensure you take away the impression the author wants you to have.)
Of course, Second Life is featured prominently. {yawns}
So what else is new? Of course they have to dredge-up the ridiculous, alarmist, overblown case of the so-called pedo-players ('age-play' is still the wrong term in my opinion, even though technically that's what it was - adults playing children - sick if you ask me, but 'age-play' usually involves an adult role-playing a 'child' of legal age.)
Anyway, the conjunction of "Second Life" and "cybersex" will not go away. The are forever linked. Fused, welded, tied, cemented together. Mention one and the other comes to mind automatically thanks to the overblown reports by totally inexperienced reporters looking for dirt on anything and everyone they write about just to sensationalize something to get people to actually read their garbage so they can get the ad-impressions required to make a buck or two.
Even though statical fact shows, without a doubt, that approximately 14% of all Second Life users will have anything at all to do with "sex" - real or imagined. The rest? They just go in to role-play or otherwise socialize, waste time, build, try their hand at running a business... any one of the other bazillion activities that can be partaken of in second Life. But of course, anyone who writes for the public with any kind of false authority will seek-out the seedy underground of anything. Especially politics.
A subject such as this turns heads, gets attention, draws readers, gets ad-impressions, makes money for Salon. It is all about money, of course. I mean... sex sells. Hell, Philip knew that when he created Linden Land, hence Second Life.
So what else is new?
Interview with Damon Brown, author of "Porn & Pong": "Last year, real-life officials in Brussels opened an investigation into a 'Second Life' rape. When did rape first show up in virtual worlds? Is there such a thing as rape when you're communicating with someone via text?"
So now I'm curios... do you play the sex game in SL?
I do. And I don't bother hide it. In fact, I tend to lean toward the least-vanilla side.
Have collar, will leash. ~Evil grin as he curls index finger at you sending the universal sign for "come to me"~
