The thing is, if you are so much into your character that you actually do develop a back-story, why put it all out there like some book at all?

What if something in your back story causes you to have some kind of quirk. Then keep role-playing that quirk and allow your back-stoy to come in role-play over time.

And you are right - I would see some of these elaborate profile picks which, first were too long for me to bother readin and second, tended to be a bit intimidating when I was first starting out in my role-play universe.

In truth though - all role play is realtively light. I find the majority in role-playing circles are all still learning, too. And of course, it incredibly rare that a role-player - no matter the genre - is a comple asshat when not in-character.

Albeit, I have met those people, too.

This is slightly off topic but I wanted to mention it.

Not being an avid role player myself I actually find these profile picks with tons of character background a bit intimidating.

I've visited many RP sims, of all sorts of themes, thinking about dabbling in, but I see the people with hugely developed back stories that take 3 picks to details and I just think there is no way I can do that and back away from the whole idea.

It's too bad there isn't opportunites for casual or "light" RP that doesn't involve so much preparation.
